Children get stuck into safety

"
This project is an excellent example of how similar organisations working in different geographical areas can benefit by sharing the good practice developed by Barbryn. The sticker booklets went down a storm in all three areas.

: background
Project Officer for the Safer Canley Initiative, Acting Inspector Kerry Blakeman, was keen for local children to learn how to stay safe and out of trouble. He asked Barbryn to develop his idea for a fun sticker booklet into a community safety sticker scheme which would also teach them some important safety messages.

: solution

Barbryn’s Safer Canley Sticker Scheme brought together many local organisations including the fire service, Police and Neighbourhood Wardens. An eye-catching sticker book was designed, featuring 10 messages such as ‘never play with fire’ and ‘the police can help’.

Each week local primary school children had to look for a special poster displayed in their school and then tell a Neighbourhood Warden what the message displayed on it was. They then received a sticker to put in their book.

All completed sticker books were put into a prize draw and every child received a certificate.

:achievements
The sticker scheme took the area by storm, with more than 250 children clamouring to get the latest sticker each week from the Neighbourhood Wardens! It helped introduce the Wardens to local children and their parents and ensured the Wardens, Police Officers and others got their safety messages across. The scheme proved so successful, that Barbryn was asked to roll out a similar scheme in both South East Coventry and Burton on Trent.
