Wardens are streets ahead

Within the first 10 days of Streets Ahead arriving through residents’ doors, hundreds had already returned the freepost coupon saying why the Wardens should be saved. All the feedback was used by the Quality of Life Project Manager to help secure succession funding which enabled the Wardens to stay on the streets in South East Coventry.

The Quality of Life Project is funded through the Government’s Neighbourhood Renewal Fund to improve the quality of life for local people through initiatives such as Neighbourhood Wardens. Barbryn has worked with the Project since its launch, producing the Streets Ahead newspaper for local residents. When funding for the Wardens came under threat in March 2004, Barbryn began a ‘Save Our Wardens’ campaign in the newspaper.

Barbryn designed a special campaign logo which was used on the front page of Streets Ahead to encourage residents to turn to the thoughtprovoking feature inside. The feature showed the huge difference the Wardens had made through ‘before and after’ photographs, facts and figures and quotes from residents. It asked residents to imagine what their community would be like without the Wardens and offered them chance to do something about it. Residents were asked to fill in a coupon in the newspaper saying why they want their Wardens to stay.

The following issue of Streets Ahead printed feedback from residents, building momentum for the campaign. Local daily newspaper, the Coventry Evening Telegraph, saw the campaign and came on board, spreading news of the plight of the Wardens throughout Coventry.
